Vinny Manniello, RIP

The CastilesWhile E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons' passing in June 2011 captured more attention from those interested in the career of Bruce Springsteen, another formative figure in Springsteen's history passed away in December largely unremarked by the mainstream press: Vinny Manniello, drummer for Springsteen's early band the Castiles. Manniello was 64 and resided in New Jersey.

""Formed in the mid ’60s, the band, with Manniello on drums, was responsible for Springsteen’s first recording sessions on May 18, 1966. The resulting single was 'Baby I,' backed with 'That’s What You Got.' There are believed to be only four legitimate copies of that record in existence today." The band was active in New Jersey and New York until it broke up in August 1968.
